At Newlife IVF, we understand that families come in many forms. We believe they bring joy to life and we are dedicated to helping you create your family in whatever form that takes.
Our sperm donors are amazing people who want to help you create new life. This is an incredibly generous gift that has the potential to make a world of difference to you.
Newlife IVF has a comprehensive sperm donor program available to couples and singles for use in Donor Insemination and IVF cycles. We have also teamed up with a leading international service – The European Sperm Bank – to provide you with selected high-quality international donor sperm.
Being clinician owned and led, we combine years of expertise and world’s best clinical practice with genuine empathy and an exceptionally well-supported experience. This personalised care is extended to our donors. We really value them, and we prioritise the ethical sourcing of donors who have insight and understanding into the implications of their donation and identity release.
Your first step is to have a consultation with one of our experienced Fertility Specialists. They will review your health and fertility, discuss the best treatment for you, and the process for accessing donor sperm.
When ready, you will meet with the Newlife IVF donor team and counsellors to understand the implications and responsibilities of using donor sperm.
Once you and your Fertility Specialist have decided that donor sperm is required, you will be introduced to the Newlife IVF donor and counselling team. After your first counselling session is complete and you confim your wish to proceed, you can create your login, learn about our donors and then choose the donor that is perfect for you. All our available donors exist on this one database. We do ask that you only choose a donor when you are within 3 months of commencing treatment. This ensures the availability of sufficient donors to those who are actively engaged in treatment.
By law, all clinics are required to collect certain pieces of information about donors. This includes identifying information such as their name and date of birth (which are kept in a central registry but not revealed to recipients), as well as height, weight, ethnicity, eye and hair colour, and occupation amongst others. Our donor profiles provide non-identifying details as well as a physical description and information about their unique personalities and experiences. We also provide a summary of our thorough medical, genetic, and infective testing.
At Newlife IVF, we want you to have more information, so we go out of our way to get to know our donors. We ask them to complete in-depth questionnaires about themselves, their family, and their history. We want to share their stories with you – where they came from, what makes them unique, what makes them think and feel, and where they are going. We have curated this list of questions as we feel they give some specific answers as well as a rounded view of the donor. Whilst we encourage donors to share as much as they are comfortable, this needs to be balanced with their privacy and having a never-ending questionnaire. All the information we have on the donor (other than identifying details) is presented in their profile and unfortunately, we cannot contact them with individual questions. Their medical details are summarised, but the written answers are their own words.
Whilst we do ask donors about possibly sharing some photos of them as a child (<5yo), most are not comfortable with this and we respect that decision. Profiles where photos can be requested, are clearly identified.
We think we have achieved a good balance and we hope that this helps you choose the donor that is perfect for you.
Our donors are incredible people between 21 and 46 years of age who have volunteered to help you create your family. Other than for ‘reasonable expenses’, our donors are not paid and genuinely do this for altruistic reasons. At any time, our pool of donors varies, however they represent a wide range of ethnicities, education, personalities, and people.
Newlife IVF has an active and very well supported sperm donor program. We’re always happy to hear from new donors who want to help others create their family. Our donors represent many ethnicities, occupations, education and personalities. For more information on our donor program, you can visit us at www.newlifeivf.com.au/become-a-donor.
Our donors undergo rigorous testing for the most common transmissible infections. This list is comprehensive and more extensive than what is routinely undertaken on the partners of our fertility patients. Testing occurs before the donor enters our program and then again at least 3 months after their last sperm donation. This quarantine period follows the advice of Australian Infectious Disease Specialists and is considered world’s best practice.
Of course you can. Many people prefer a ‘known donor’ who is a friend or colleague or even a relative of their partner. The process is straight forward, similar to that of our clinic recruited donors, and occurs regularly. If your donor is healthy, undergoes all the required screening and checks, and is ticked off by our counsellors, we are more than happy to help you use your own perfect donor.
Our donors are thoroughly screened for genetic and medical risk factors with a comprehensive genetic and familial history. A genetic screen is undertaken, and our experienced fertility specialists review each donor together with our genetics team, to assess whether any further testing is required. If significant genetic conditions are identified, this information is included in the individual Sperm Donor profiles.
Newlife IVF actively recruits new donors on a regular basis. As a result of our rigorous screening and our choice to engage with donors who have good insight of the implications of their donation, only a small proportion of men who initially approach us make it into our donor program.
Donor sperm is prioritised and allocated to those patients who have been medically reviewed and are committed to or have commenced a ‘donor cycle’. We cannot guarantee the donor you select will be available until it is actively assigned to you. We encourage you to consult with our Donor Coordinator to ensure your preference is secured.
The demand for donor sperm can at times exceed supply, especially if you are wanting a specific characteristic or ethnic background. At those times, we will maintain a waitlist and contact you when you reach the top.
Under Victorian law, no more than 10 women can create a baby with the same man (donor). This includes his own family. The maximum number of women we can allocate donor sperm to is 9. However, some men choose to restrict the number of women who can access their donated sperm.
We teamed up with a leading international service – The European Sperm Bank – to provide you with greater choice and more unique donors. These donors are recruited by our affiliate, typically in Europe, and undergo the same rigorous medical, background, genetic and infective testing as our own donors. They are interviewed by the Melbourne based Newlife IVF Donor Team and Counsellors and enter our program on the same ethical and altruistic basis as the local donors and in full compliance with Victorian regulations. They have agreed to our family limits and the release of their identifying information when the child is older, as required by Victorian law.
The higher cost of these samples reflects the expense of recruiting overseas and undertaking our thorough testing regime in Europe together with ensuring compliance with Victorian law and the many other steps this involves. There is also significant expense in safely transporting this precious material to Australia. Newlife IVF has undertaken this significant logistical step so that you have a much greater choice in finding your perfect donor.
